Donald Trump has never been one to shy away from controversy, and I’m a Second Amendment absolutist, so, when I saw that Trump gave a directive about 2A rights, I had to know more.
Now, admittedly, I went into the article cautiously because Trump hadn’t been as gung-ho, full on for 2A rights in his first administration as I would have liked.
Of course, Trump being Trump, this directive is bound to stir the pot with those who panic over the idea of people owning firearms.
Let’s get you some details, though. Michael Clements writes,
A July 18 statement from the Justice Department states that President Donald Trump directed the department to “address the ongoing infringements of the Second Amendment rights of [U.S.] citizens—all of them.”
The first move on this directive?
The Department of Justice has proposed a rule to restore the Second Amendment rights of people who have been convicted of certain crimes but who are not “likely to act in a manner dangerous to public safety.”
The department submitted the proposed rule “regarding the exercise of the Attorney General’s authority under 18 U.S.C. 925(c) to grant relief to individuals who are otherwise precluded from possessing firearms,” to the Federal Register on July 18.
Gun Owners of America have already stated their support for this rule change, and I’d sure that many other people who advocate for Constitutional rights will be pleased with this.
And you can already expect anti-2A people to start wailing and gnashing their teeth as if some Biblical-style apocalypse will take place in America because of this rule change.
My bet? Gun violence won’t go up one iota.
Because legal gun owners aren’t the problem when it comes to gun violence. It’s criminals who are. And they don’t follow laws (such as gun control laws) anyway. That’s what makes them criminals, right?
